Deuteronomy Notes

Deuteronomy: Choose Christ and LiveI.                      Introductiona.        Duet. consists of the last three speeches Moses made to Israel, as they stood across the Jordan River before entering the promised land.b.       An entire, rebellious generation has died in the wilderness of Kadesh, and Moses himself will die before entering the land.c.        This book is written in the form of a treaty or covenant.                                                               i.      It contains an historical prologue                                                              ii.      Laws  and stipulations                                                            iii.      Blessings and cursesd.       The name for the book comes from 17:18 – a second copy of the law.e.       I will have to say that I was very touched as I read Deuteronomy…it is one of the most beautiful books in the old testament.f.         My aim this morning is not to cover the entire book, which I encourage you to read, my aim is to demonstrate how Christ is at the center of this book and how God will use the rebellion of the nation of Israel to bring the gospel to the gentiles.g.        We have to keep in our memory the fact that the exodus, the giving of the law, the journey in the wilderness, and the entrance into the promised land is not the final fulfillment of the promises of God.  They are the shadows of the greater more perfect fulfillments to come as God is restoring for himself a Kingdom where He establishes a People for himself, In His Place, and Under His Rule.h.       I am going to make two simple points this morning:  1) Jesus Christ is Lord 2) Choose Christ and Live.II.                    Jesus Christ is Lorda.        Key NT Passage: Romans 10:1-14b.       Connection with Deuteronomy 3o                                                               i.      Jesus is the One, True, God1.       Duet. 6:4-62.       John 1                                                              ii.      Jesus Christ is Sovereign to Save1.       Deut 7:6-8 – It is Because of God’s Love2.       Deut 9:1-6 – It is Because of God’s Purpose                                                            iii.      Jesus Christ is Sovereign to Judge1.       Deut 11:26-282.       Deut 28:36-48/58-68III.                  Choose Christ and Livea.        What did it mean for the people to Choose Life? (30:15-20)b.       Could the people ever accomplish this?                                                               i.      31:16-22 1.       Up to this point in the book we may be tempted to think the people can do this….but God tells Moses they will not.2.       God gives Moses a song to remind the people of their failure to follow the Lord.3.       32:21 – a key verse in understanding what God is up to.a.        Salvation will eventually come to the Jews through the gentilesb.       Jesus is the only Jew who would fulfill all the covenant stipulations of the law! c.        This gave him the ability to be the only acceptable sacrifice to God for the payment of our sin.d.       Although all the blessings of this book are rightfully His, he became cursed by God in our place on the cross.e.       So now…Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.  To Choose Life is to Choose Christ and live.
