Dueteronomy is a Beautiful Book

Sorry that I am behind in posting about Dueteronomy.  Reading this book in one sitting was a great experience for me.  It certainly is one of the most beautiful books in the Scriptures.  One of the striking aspects of this book is the tension between human responsibility and divine soveriegnty.  As you progress through each of Moses’ speeches, you get the sense that the people can do what God tells them to do.  You have the feeling that this new generation is going to get it for the first time.  As they prepare to enter the Promised Land, one gets the feeling that there is no way these people will ever turn again to disbelief and idolatry.

Then, in chapter 31, God tells Moses, “You are going to die and the people are going to “whore after other gods.”  OUCH!  The people are going to break the covenant and God knows it, yet he still makes the covenant.  What is the point…the point is that we can’t do it.  We are cursed and gone astray.  We cannot meet the requirements of the covenant…only Christ can do this!   Beautiful, simply beautiful.
